Today’s Sports News – NHL news: Sidney Crosby out until March; Martin Brodeur injures knee; Marc Savard out for season; Jaromir Jagr to make comeback?

Sidney Crosby out until March

Somehow, the Pittsburgh Penguins remain alive in the Eastern Conference playoff hunt, but the road doesn’t get any easier. They’ve already lost Evgeni Malkin for the season with a torn ACL and MCL. Now, it appears Sidney Crosby’s concussion will keep him out until March. He’s already missed 13 games with the injury and won’t resume normal exercise activities for at least 10 days.

Just when Martin Brodeur had found his game again and the Devils were heating up, going 7-1-2 over their last 10 games, Marty injured his knee. He went down on Sunday with what is being called a “non-operable” injury. There’s no set timetable for his return.

Not that the news surprises anyone – but Boston has officially shut Marc Savard down for the remainder of the season. For the second straight season, a concussion has derailed his year. His career status is definitely in doubt.

Could Jaromir Jagr follow Peter Forsberg back to North America? While he’s openly stated that he’s having lots of fun of playing in the KHL, his contract expires after this season. He said he’d think about returning to the NHL if he had a chance to join a Stanley Cup contender. “I’d like just to help a team like that on the second or third line,” he said.

NBA news: Lakers joining the Carmelo Anthony sweepstakes?

Oh, boy. Looks like we can’t assume the New York Knicks are the top player to land Carmelo Anthony. Suddenly, the Lakers have popped up. We already know Magic Johnson publicly suggested that they make a big move. Could they send Andrew Bynum to Denver while also taking on some of the Nuggets’ uglier contracts?

For now, it’s just a rumor. Some reports suggest it’s a “leak” by Denver to make the Knicks sweat and improve their offer.

NFL news: Sean Payton insists he’s not leaving New Orleans; Michael Vick confronted after getting key to the city in Dallas; Eddie Royal has hip surgery

The Sean Payton rumors are rampant. Is he leaving the New Orleans Saints to become the Dallas Cowboys’ new general manager? He’s building a home in Dallas and was the team’s quarterback coach from 2003 to 2005. Saints defensive co-ordinator Gregg Williams also didn’t interview for any jobs this offseason, leading to speculation that he is simply waiting for the Saints’ head coaching position.

However, the Saints released a statement Monday insisting that Payton is not joining the Cowboys in any capacity. Rumor squashed – for now?.

I know many people were happy with Michael Vick’s redemption story this season. He did his time and he’s come a long way. But the key to a city? Maybe a little too soon for that, Dallas. While Michael Vick was giving a talk to a group of teens at a pre-Super Bowl event, Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine gave Vick to the key to the city of Dallas. The actual mayor of Dallas, Tom Leppert, says the city never sanctioned the move.

After receiving the key in the unofficially ceremony, radio reporter Richard Hunter confronted Vick and showed him a picture of a dog he’d adopted from Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels. Vick’s entourage rushed him out of the event.

Eddie Royal may not be ready for the Denver Broncos’ 2011 training camp. The wideout recently had hip surgery and will need six months to recover. At the very least, he’ll miss offseason workouts.
